The concept of FEMPIRE has been haunting Rose Bendixen for a while now. Throughout her paintings, feminine looking silhouettes appear while slowly, but steadily, amassing into their own femine empire. A collection of people where honesty is king and vulnerability is a sign of strength.
Rose offers us this Fempire with a combination of paint, poetry and an increasing amount of embroidery. Her painted black figures are meant as a “blank space” which encourage viewers to exercise empathy and imagine themselves or anyone else (regardless of gender, sex, race, class etc.) as part of the Fempire. While incorporated texts, that “are all personal, but not all reality,” acknowledge the highs and lows of our common human experience. You will also notice a growing presence of embroidery in Rose’s work– adding more layers and an enhanced sensory experience to this alternative reality.
