ẤT TỴ with Phuc Van Dang + Victor Hansen

– a conceptual and artistic setting of "the Year of the Snake" - and yes, it's the year of The Snake in 2025!

Monday Studio is pleased to present you to

ẤT TỴ

with Phuc Van Dang & Victor Hansen - and their creative process' turning symbolizes wisdom, transformation, and mystery into their very own visual univers, rotating clockwise around The Snake!

Phuc and Victor's fascination about ancient printing techniques, such as lithography, adds a well known but still mystical element to the art works. The unpredictable nature of these processes aligns with the snake's association with mystery and beauty.

Through this approach, they embrace the concept of constant transformation, allowing their artwork to evolve and change, much like the snake shedding it's skin.

Their exhibition reflects the snake's symbolism of change and renewal, as represented by its ability to shed its skin. By experimenting with different materials and techniques, Phuc and Victor aim to create a constantly evolving visual expression that mirrors the snake's transformative nature.

WHAT ABOUT THE ARTISTS?

In Phuc Van Dang's works, stories are often told in a single, unbroken line, and the line becomes a narrative in itself. He never makes corrections; once a line is painted, it stays there, and just like in life, each step leads to the next. Even if a mistake is made, it is transformed into something positive and part of the whole. Phuc Van Dang creates his paintings without sketches and sees the organically growing compositions as an integral part of the process; his paintings develop like living organisms, taking on new forms throughout the working process without a predetermined outcome in mind.

With that, he has "carved out his own sense of identity". It is a style with a black dense color that forms bold lines in closed line progressions. One can recognize figures with eyes, mouths, feather shapes with active tips. There may be profile heads with large open eyes that shoot forward from wavy lines, puzzled or smiling. There may be growth with succulent plant forms. There is a fluid calligraphic effect with abstract power.

The solid black line provides tightness. There is no correction to be made. The images arise as a "living organism" "without a predetermined result in mind". Still, the image must contain a lot, it must function as a fable, a story with past, present and future. "Knowing where we are and what has come before is key when adding something new to a space". It is "man at the center of stories that reflect on themes such as personal stories, social problems and movements that shape our culture today".

Victor's artistic process is deeply rooted in the power of visual expression and emotional storytelling. He begins with lines, which serve as conduits for his emotions, transforming his thoughts into visual narratives. As he paints or draws, Victor allows his imagination to guide him, eschewing specific forms or styles in favor of material exploration.

For Victor, the visual world is his primary language, which he recreates through a blend of imagination, dreams, speed, and movement. His compositions are dynamic, with colors playing a crucial role in conveying expression and emotion. This approach aligns with the principles of Expressionism, where artists use color and form to evoke emotional responses rather than simply replicating reality.

Victor's process of material exploration is particularly noteworthy. As he works with various art materials, he discovers new ways to express his ideas, allowing the physical properties of the medium to influence his creative decisions. This hands-on approach to artmaking enables him to create unique textures, effects, and visual narratives that are deeply personal and emotionally resonant.

By embracing this fluid and exploratory approach to art-making, Victor creates works that are not bound by traditional styles or forms. Instead, his art becomes a direct channel for his inner world, where colors, lines, and materials come together to create powerful visual stories that speak to the viewer on an emotional level.
