YOU GOT A NEW TATTOO?
just treat it with care...
It typically takes three to four weeks for a tattoo to heal.
You should plan on caring for your tattoo during this period.
Caring for your tattoo is very important to avoid inflammation, scarring, and other infections.
HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR NEW TATTOO
– After getting tattooed, the tattoo is usually covered with plastic film. Sometimes we recommend to keeping the film on for 3-4 hours, while others times we might suggest to leaving it on for up to 24 hours. This depends on the tattoo size and complexity.
– When it's time to remove the dressing: wash your hands with warm water and soap, then gently remove the film. Rinse the tattoo carefully with warm, soapy water to wash away any excess ink and blood. Let the tattoo air dry or gently pat it dry with a clean / unused towel.
– During the first week, rinse the wound 2-3 times a day. The scabs should ideally fall off on their own, so remember to be gentle. So - no scratching!
– When the skin begins to heal, you can apply a wound ointment to prevent dryness. Avoid tight clothing on a fresh tattoo, such as bra straps, waistband edges, and pants that rub against the skin. The less irritation your tattoo experiences, the better the healing process.
– For the first two weeks after getting a tattoo, you should avoid swimming, sunlight, and movements that stretch the skin. After that, always use sunscreen on your tattoo, as sunlight can fade the color.

THE FAQ
WE KNOW YOU OFTEN HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS, SO WE'VE MADE YOU A Q'n'A WITH THE BASICS COVERED. HOPE IT'S ALL HELPFUL ( :
Does getting a tattoo hurt?
Yes, it hurts, but it’s not unbearable for most people. The level of pain depends on your tolerance and the location of the tattoo - areas with less fat, like ribs or hands, usually feel sharper.
If you’re nervous, talk to the tattooer; we've seen it most and can help you through it all.
Can I bring a friend to my appointment?
We are all okay with one friend coming along for moral support. Just keep in mind that space can be limited, and too many people can disrupt the process.
Always check with us first to confirm.
What if I want to change my design last minute?
If it’s a minor tweak, your artist can likely adjust it on the spot!
For major changes, it might require a reschedule, so let us know as soon as possible.
Clear communication ensures you get exactly what you want.
What should I eat before my tattoo session?
Eat a solid meal and drink water before your appointment. Low blood sugar can make you feel dizzy or faint during the process.
Your body will thank you, and it helps ensure a smoother experience for both you and your artist.
Can I take painkillers before my tattoo?
Avoid blood-thinning painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can cause more bleeding. Acetaminophen (paracetamol) is a better option if needed.
If you’re unsure, ask your artist to guide you.
Can I get a tattoo if I’ve been drinking alcohol?
No, alcohol thins your blood, which can cause more bleeding during the tattoo process. This can affect how well the ink sets and make healing more difficult.
Stay sober for at least 24 hours before your appointment at Blækbar - it’s worth it for the best results.
How long will it take to heal?
The outer layer of skin (the epidermis) usually heals in 2–4 weeks. Everyone heals differently, so keep following the aftercare routine your artist provides.
Don’t rush the process - great tattoos deserve great healing.
Is it normal if my tattoo peels?
Yes, peeling is part of the healing process and means your skin is regenerating. It might look a bit flaky or dull during this time, but don’t pick at it!
Let it peel naturally, and your tattoo will reveal its final look once healed.
Can I get a touch-up if needed?
Yes, touch-ups are common if small imperfections appear after healing.
At Blækbar, we offer touch-ups to ensure your tattoo looks as perfect as possible.
Please check with your artist about their policy and timing for touch-ups.
Can I work out after getting a tattoo?
It’s best to wait at least 2–3 days before hitting the gym. Excess sweating or stretching the area can irritate your tattoo. For high-friction areas, wait longer and always clean the area gently after exercise.
We will always advise you based on the placement of your tattoo.
Can I swim with a fresh tattoo?
No, you should avoid swimming or soaking the tattoo in water (including long baths and hot tubs) for at least two weeks. Chlorine, salt water, and bacteria can irritate the skin or cause infections.
Stick to regular showers until it’s healed.
What should I use to care for my tattoo?
Use an unscented, tattoo-friendly moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Avoid heavy creams like petroleum jelly as they can trap bacteria.
If you don't have any idea, we can always recommend some the best products for your aftercare, so don’t hesitate to ask.
Will my tattoo fade over time?
Yes, all tattoos fade slightly over time, especially when exposed to the sun. Sunscreen is your best friend - use it regularly is the best way to keep your ink looking fresh.
All tattoos done at Blækbar are designed to last, but good care is key - it keeps them vibrant longer.
What if my tattoo gets infected?
If your tattoo becomes red, heavy swollen, or painful beyond the normal healing stage, it could be infected as it heals. Clean it as instructed and seek advice at a healthcare professional or contact us at Blækbar.
Please don’t just ignore the signs - it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Is it normal if my tattoo scabs?
Light scabbing is totally normal, but thick, heavy scabs could mean the area is too dry. Keep the tattoo clean and moisturized, and never pick at the scabs.
If you’re unsure about the healing process, reach out to anyone at Blækbar for advice.
How do I know if I’m allergic to tattoo ink?
Allergies to ink are rare, but they can happen. If you’ve had reactions to dyes, pigments, or certain metals before, let your artist know.
We only use high-quality inks, but we can always discuss patch testing if needed.
Why does my tattoo look dull after a week?
This is normal during the healing phase. Your skin is regenerating, and the top layers might look cloudy or flaky. Once fully healed, the colors and lines will appear sharp and vibrant.
If you’re worried, check in with your artist.
Can I use scented lotion on my tattoo?
No, scented lotions can irritate the healing skin and cause reactions. Stick to unscented, gentle products recommended by your artist for the best results.
Do tattoos stretch if I gain or lose weight?
Yes, significant weight changes can stretch or distort tattoos, especially in areas like the stomach or thighs. However, most tattoos adapt well to minor changes.
If you have concerns, discuss placement with your artist beforehand.
When can I get my next tattoo?
Once your current tattoo has fully healed, which usually takes 4 - 6 weeks.
It’s best to give your skin enough time to recover before starting a new piece.
If in doubt, ask your artist - we will always guide you on the right timing.
