POP-UP: SWITCH ROCKS w/ Kristian Rasmussen

Monday Studio presents Switch Rocks - a pop-up exhibition by graphic designer and visual culture scholar Kristian K. Rasmussen.

Switch Rocks explores how semantic sign systems; alphabets, glyphs and symbols – emerge, mutate and change meaning over time. From hieroglyphics and cuneiform to contemporary digital signs and graffiti, the works investigate how visual language is never fixed, but constantly rewritten.

Working with a horizontal, timeline-inspired format and strict reading directions, Rasmussen samples and remixes signs from across cultures into a synthetic visual language of his own. Clear, saturated colors reference print and digital reproduction, while each sign carries traces of use, age and previous forms.

Color plays a crucial role. Fiery manga reds, bad-taste pinks and comic-book blues point directly to the means of reproduction: print, digital media and mass circulation. This is not painting. This is not nostalgia. It is a celebration of humanity’s ongoing ability to create, break and rebuild meaning through abstract signs — fast, unstable and playful.

In Kristian's own words: “The series is not a critique of the world of signs or empty semantics but a celebration of humanity’s ability to convey meaning through abstract signs put in chronological order.”

Alongside Switch Rocks, selected works from Rasmussen’s ongoing series Systems will be shown.

In stark black and white, these pieces explore how complex structures; surveillance, psychology, war, belief systems and progress, can be translated into visual reference points.

Not as answers, but as images to think with.

This pop-up is an invitation to read, experience and misread signs – and to accept that meaning is always in motion.
